Startup Weekend (9-11 August 2024)

The Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) kicked off its vibrant startup weekend 2024, or SW@APU, from August 9 to 11. The programme is a structured bootcamp aimed at helping participants who have identified a need or a problem and wish to test the viability of ideas and pitch their startup ideas at the end of the programme. Participants pitched to panel of judges from startup ecosystem players, venture capital representatives & angel investors.

A group of 60 aspiring student entrepreneurs, along with academic mentors and industry professionals, came together and participated to work in teams.

The Startup Weekend which was held between the 9th to 11th of August 2024 saw a total of 11 teams showcase their innovative startup ideas to a distinguished panel of judges.

The programme culminated in a pitch session whereby 11 teams pitched their business ideas to a panel of judges consisting of Tengku Mubiin (Reactor School), Mr. Abdul Hakim Sahidi (Managing Director, Leave a Nest Malaysia) and Mr. Bryan Chung (Executive Director, True Vine Capital Partners).

Team ThreatPlay emerged victorious with its innovative approach to enhance cybersecurity awareness through specialised training. Team Newbies secured the first runner-up spot with its budget-friendly tech solutions for Malaysia’s B40 income group. Team FutureMinds rounded out the top three with its IoT-enabled device designed to assist the elderly and visually impaired in avoiding accidents.

Professor Dr. Vinesh Thiruchelvam, Chief Innovation and Enterprise Officer of APU in his closing remarks summarised: “Over the past weekend, we have witnessed a remarkable fusion of creativity and ambition from our participants. This Startup Weekend was not just about competition; it was a profound learning journey for all involved. The diverse range of ideas presented, from cybersecurity enhancements to inclusive tech solutions, reflects the dynamic spirit and potential of our entrepreneurial community. As we celebrate the success of our teams today, let us continue to nurture these innovative sparks into sustainable ventures. Congratulations to all, and may your paths forward be as bold and inspiring as the ideas you have shared here.”
